APRS stations carry a symbol that says what they are. Here are the ones you’ll watch check in to APRS Thursday — from cars and boats to balloons, weather stations, and the infrastructure that carries every packet.
- MobileOn the move — a car, truck, or RV beaconing its position from the road.
- MarineA boat or ship checking in from the water.
- AircraftAn airborne station — general aviation, a glider, or a drone.
- HAB balloonA high-altitude balloon — sometimes checking in from the stratosphere.
- WeatherAn automated weather station reporting temperature, wind, and rain.
- HandheldAn operator on foot with a handheld (HT).
- Digipeater / iGateThe RF relay and internet gateway that carry your packet onto APRS-IS.
- SatelliteA check-in relayed through an amateur radio satellite.
